SAFER HANDLING DEMONSTRATIONS
When working with a 400-700kg horse, there is any number of opportunities that can present and cause injury.
However many of these risks can be minimised and often prevented. Retraining and educating our horses takes time, but we can re-educate ourselves to take a different approach by learning new techniques to reduce the risk of accident and injury.
INDEPENDENT HEALTH AND SAFETY AUDITING
Equestrian businesses, institutions and organisations conducting any type of equestrian related event or operation, need to be aware of/and conduct routine Health and Safety Audits. This can minimise liability in the event of an accident or injury. Give yourself peace of mind and get an independent audit of your business.
Note: Steve is also available as an assessor for horse related injuries/accidents.

FUTURE PROOFING AND DISCUSSION
Equestrian Sport is currently classified as a recreational pursuit. However Equestrian Events & Businesses are a growing sector.
In time, the category could change and become a grey area without professional consultation.
To ensure a bright future for Equestrian Sport and Enterprises in New Zealand, it is important we begin to discuss and implement a new standard of excellence in our sport.
ABOUT
Since 1996 Steve Houston has started more than 3000 horses under saddle that have gone on to be ridden in all disciplines, from Top Level Polo and Western to Dressage and Show jumping.
Steve's main aim is to produce calm, confident and well mannered horses, by installing a foundation that creates a co-operative and trusting relationship between horse and rider.
In the early years of horse-training, Steve spent alot of time traveling in the USA and Canada attending clinics with top horsemen: Ray Hunt, Robin Hahn, Bryan Neubert, Sid Cook, Jim Briggs and Buck Brannaman, in an effort to further his knowledge with horses. Steve then went onto to work for Jim, Sid and Robin, Robin Hahn is a multiple Olympian and Pan American games team member, Jim is a very handy horseman/cowboy and Sid was a student of the infamous horseman Tom Dorrance. The late Tom and his brother Bill were the founding fathers of what is now known universally as 'Horsemanship'.
These men, and particularly Jim, Sid and Robin, have inspired Steve's career path and in part created the fortitude to devote a lifetime to horses and their owners.
Steve continues to run popular clinics throughout New Zealand to help people learn some of these groundwork and ridden skills for themselves.
Steve is still starting horses, however he is also now working with individuals, businesses and organisations on how best to keep people safe around horses and in our sport, to reduce the incidents of accident and injury.
